GNWL, PQWL, RLWL, TQWL: which waitlist you're on, and which one actually clears

Your waitlist number matters far less than the letters in front of it. GNWL clears most often, TQWL least — a TQWL 6 is usually worse off than a GNWL 40.

Read the letters first. They tell you which queue you joined. The number only tells you where you stand inside it.

Why there is more than one waitlist

A train has a fixed number of berths, and Indian Railways does not sell them all from one pool. Berths are set aside in advance for different kinds of passenger — people boarding at the starting station, people boarding somewhere in the middle, people booking at the last minute.

Each of those pools has its own waiting list. So two people on the same train, in the same class, on the same day, can hold completely different tickets: one waiting behind forty people with good odds, the other behind six with almost none. That is the part nobody explains, and it is the whole reason waitlists feel random.

GNWL — General Waiting List

You get GNWL when you board at or near the train's starting station, which is where the largest block of berths is allocated. It draws from the biggest pool, so it benefits from cancellations along the whole route — and most people who cancel a long-distance ticket are in this pool too. It is the waitlist you want.

Reading it: a ticket showing 42 and then 18 means you were 42nd when you booked and are 18th now. Twenty-four people ahead of you have gone. The second number is the live one, and movement between the two is the only real evidence you have.

PQWL — Pooled Quota Waiting List

You get PQWL when you board somewhere in the middle of the route and get off before the end — a shorter hop on a long train. Here is the catch: the pooled quota is shared between several intermediate stations at once. A small number of berths covers the whole middle section, and everyone boarding anywhere in that stretch competes for the same handful.

So a cancellation only helps if it frees a berth for your particular stretch. Someone cancelling the full end-to-end journey does not necessarily release anything into your pool. A PQWL 20 is genuinely harder to clear than a GNWL 60. The number looks better. It is not.

RLWL — Remote Location Waiting List

RLWL is issued for intermediate stations important enough to get their own small quota — a big junction partway along the route. It clears only from cancellations against that station's quota; cancellations elsewhere on the train do you no good at all. It is also confirmed separately and often late, which is why an RLWL ticket can sit unmoved for a week and then confirm on the last afternoon.

TQWL — Tatkal Quota Waiting List

This is the hardest of all to clear, and not slightly — structurally. The Tatkal quota only frees up when somebody cancels a confirmed Tatkal ticket, and a confirmed Tatkal ticket earns no refund on cancellation. So essentially nobody cancels. The queue has almost nothing feeding it.

There is a harsher rule too: TQWL does not become RAC. With an ordinary waitlist you can often slide into RAC and at least travel sitting. From TQWL there is no such landing — it confirms, or it is cancelled and refunded. A TQWL 5 is not nearly there.

What actually decides it

Roughly four hours before the train departs from its origin, the railway prepares the chart and the waitlist stops being a prediction. For overnight trains the chart is usually made the previous evening.

That last line surprises people every day. A waitlisted e-ticket is not a ticket to travel. It is a place in a queue that expired.

The honest part

Nobody can tell you whether your ticket will clear. Prediction percentages — ours and everyone else's — are built from how that train's queue behaved on past journeys. They are a useful guide and they are not a promise. A festival week, an exam date, or a single cancelled train elsewhere on the network will beat any model.

What you can do is read the letters, watch the second number move, and know exactly when the answer arrives: four hours before departure, not before.
