Rail distance

Railway distance calculator

The approximate distance by rail between any two Indian stations, worked out from the map and shown with its margin — for planning a journey or a parcel, not for checking a bill.

Approximate rail distance

Pick the two stations. The distance is worked out from where they are on the map and how much further a railway runs than a straight line — an estimate, shown with its margin.

approx. 1,398 km by rail — example: New Delhi to Mumbai Central

  • Very likely between 1,210 km and 1,650 kmon the railway’s own table.
  • Straight line between the two stations: 1,165 km.
  • Straight line × a rail detour of 1.2 = 1,398 km

Source: station names and positions © OpenStreetMap contributors (ODbL). The distance is the straight line between the two stations times a rail detour of 1.2, calibrated on 10 routes whose length is published and held by a test to within 15% of them (30% under 300 km). It is this site’s arithmetic, not the railway’s distance table, which is not held here. The distance printed on your ticket or parcel way bill, and the railway’s own portal, is the authority: fares and freight are charged on that figure, never on this one.

Ask TrainBot about trains on this routeTrains between two stations, seats, fares and live status — answered on this site, in any language.

TrainBot India is an independent service. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by Indian Railways, IRCTC, or any rail operator or ticketing organisation. The distance above is this site’s estimate from map positions; the figure printed on a ticket or a parcel way bill is the railway’s, and it is the one charges are worked out on.

Railway distance calculator: how the distance is worked out

Two steps, both visible in the result. First, the straight-line distance between the two stations, from their positions on OpenStreetMap, measured over the curve of the Earth. Second, a rail detour: a railway never runs straight, and across ten long-distance routes whose length is published the rails came out at between about one-tenth and one-quarter longer than the straight line, with 1.2 times in the middle. So the calculator multiplies by 1.2. A test in this site’s code holds the result to within 15% of every one of those 10routes, and the answer is shown as a span wide enough to cover that margin. It is arithmetic over geography. It is not the railway’s distance table, which this site does not hold.

Distance by rail between cities: why it is longer than the map

Ask a map for the distance between two cities and it gives a road, or a straight line. The railway between them is longer than the second and often different from the first. Trains need gentle gradients, so a line climbs a range of hills along its flank for many kilometres where a road takes hairpins. Lines were laid to reach junctions, ports and river crossings, so they swing out to towns a straight line would miss. And the network is a web, not a set of direct links: the rail route between two cities is frequently through a third. Over a thousand kilometres these wanderings average out, which is why one factor serves long routes well. Under 300 kilometres they do not — a short line up a ghat can be half as long again as the straight line — so the margin there is 30% and the calculator says so when it applies.

Routes into the Northeast: why the distance goes through New Jalpaiguri

One stretch of the map breaks the rule completely. Draw a straight line from Kolkata to Guwahati and it crosses Bangladesh; the railway cannot, and runs north instead, through the narrow strip of Indian territory between Nepal and Bangladesh known as the Siliguri corridor, before turning east. The rail distance is nearly double the straight line. So when exactly one of your two stations lies beyond that corridor, the calculator works the route as two legs through New Jalpaiguri, the junction at the corridor, and tells you it has done so. It is a fact about the map rather than an adjustment for any one train, and it brings those routes back inside the same margin as the rest.

Railway station distance and the chargeable distance on your ticket

The railway charges fares and freight by distance, from its own table of distances between stations, and it prints the figure: on a passenger ticket, and on a parcel way bill. That printed figure is the one that matters for money, and this page is not a substitute for it. An estimate that may be out by 15% is fine for deciding whether a journey is an overnight one, or roughly how far a parcel is going; it is not fine where a charge steps up at a distance slab and the estimate sits near the edge. If you are pricing a parcel with the railway parcel charges calculator or the bike parcel charges calculator, use this figure to get started and replace it with the exact distance from the railway’s own portal before relying on the result.

Questions people ask

How do I find the railway distance between two stations?

Pick the two stations in the calculator above and it gives an approximate distance by rail, with the span the exact figure is likely to fall in. For the exact distance, look at your ticket or parcel way bill, where the railway prints it, or use the railway's own portal.

How accurate is this railway distance calculator?

It was checked against ten routes whose length is published, and a test keeps it within fifteen percent of every one of them over three hundred kilometres, and within thirty percent under that. It is an estimate from the map, not the railway's distance table, which is why the answer is shown as a span and not a single exact figure.

Why is the distance by rail longer than the distance on the map?

A railway cannot run in a straight line. It follows river valleys, climbs hills on long gradients, swings out to reach junctions and cities, and goes round borders. Over a long trunk route that adds roughly a fifth to the straight line; over a short hilly one it can add far more.

Is this the distance my fare or parcel charge is worked out on?

No. Fares and freight are charged on the railway's own table of distances between stations, and that figure is printed on the ticket or the way bill. This page estimates from geography and can be out by a band, which matters when a charge changes at a distance slab. Use it to plan, not to check a bill.

Can I find the distance between any two railway stations in India?

Between any two of about eight thousand stations that OpenStreetMap has a position and a code for. Type a name or a station code and choose from the list. A very small halt that the map does not carry will not appear.

Do station to station railway kilometre kaise pata karen?

Upar calculator mein dono station chunein — naam ya station code likhkar list se. Yeh map ke hisaab se rail ki lagbhag doori batata hai, aur woh seema bhi jismein asli doori hone ki sambhavna hai. Bilkul sahi kilometre aapke ticket ya parcel way bill par chhapa hota hai; kiraya usi par lagta hai.
